Contacts do not copy to: To line of new e-mail message

I have my "Contacts" set to: "Have Contacts show first in the Address Book".
When I click on the Address Book icon my contacts show up fine. However
when I click on an E-mail address to copy to: To line of new e-mail message
it does not happen. What it does is show the individual contact information
screen for the E-mail person I am trying to copy to my New outgoing E-mail
message. This was working up until a few days ago.

My Address Book shows no entries in it; as it should because I have my
system configured as shown above: to show my "Contacts List" in Address Book.
I have spent the last several days, on my own, trying to solve this problem;
but have not been successful.

I have also noticed that my system did not automatically create my Address
Book from my Contacts List. I can't figure that one out either. Any
thoughts on why not on this issue?

What do I need to do to get my Address Book working correctly again?

You should post a more accurate description of what you are doing that
includes your Outlook version and the steps you took just before "up until a
few days ago." This behavior does not just change on its own for no reason.
You've left out the important parts anyone in a newsgroup would need to
posit a guess.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have Outlook 2003 installed. Starting about
one month ago I updated my old system to new PC hardware running Windows XP
Pro 5.1, Microsoft Office Professional Edition, Windows Internet Explorer 7,
with DSL Internet Access. Everything I am working with presents a learning
challenge for me. I have just average PC hardware, software and Internet
knowledge. I have been working on mostly minor fine tuning of "Outlook" for
the past month. I have been going back and rechecking the configurations I
made for Outlook Profiles, Accounts, Contacts, Addressbook, etc. I can not
remember all the things I did during that rechecking process.

I had major problems in getting "Outlook" configured correctly to recognize
the Pop3 and SMTP mail in and out servers. Through this newsgroup I received
the HELP I needed to get that resolved.

I ported in my Address Book from my old Compuserve system. All the names
and E-mail addresses are in place and accurate in my "Outlook" Contacts. I
just have lost the link I need to be able to copy/port e-mail addresses from
"Contacts" ; which are "Shown First in the Address Book" to my "New E-mail
message" in Outlook. When I ported in from Compuserve to Outlook Contacts I
was not able to use the more automatic process outlined in "Office Online"
because I had already cancelled my Compuserve Service so the Names and e-mail
addresses I brought across were done by a copy and paste of the text files of
same that I still had on my old hard drive. It was strictly a trial and
error process until somehow I got them all into Outlook "Contacts". As I
said before my Outlook Address Book is empty. I am only working with that
which I have in "Contacts" which I view on my screen by clicking on "Address
Book" in Outlook.

I don't know if this helps much; but I would sure like to hear some ideas on
what I migh try to get my "Address Book" function working correctly. Can you
HELP?

Whoa. What a huge amount of information you left out. Whenever you make
changes of this magnitude, you must create a new Outlook profile. Your old
one could not possible keep up with this.
