Contacts in a distribution list

Is there a recommended maximum number of contacts you can
have in a personnel distribution list?

These limits are set by your mail server, not Outlook. But since you asked
for a recommendation, I'll say 5.

Relying on DL's, especially large ones is a mistake. They are buggy and
fragile. When one address gets corrupt, the whole thing's toast and you have
to go through the list one by one to repair it--not very practical for much
more than 5.
