contacts missing in Outlook 2007

I have a strange problem. I just reformatted and reinstalled Vista. Our
company uses Exchange 2000 server (yes, it's old). I have Outlook 2007
installed. Before the reinstall I had 361 contacts in my contacts folder.
After the install I have only 26 showing in the contacts folder. However, if
I log in to any other computer with Outlook 2003 I can see all the contacts
listed. Even if I open my shared contacts folder from within another users
Outlook session I can see all 361 contacts.

I've also noticed that my Symantec AV for Exchange is reporting viruses in
my contacts folder (I didn't know viruses could attach themselves to contact
records), and my Backup Exec software keeps saying that it can't access my
Outlook folders to back them up.

I also tried setting up my Outlook profile on a test computer with Windows 7
RC installed, and Outlook 2007 and had the same results.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Is your OST at fault, perhaps? Close Outlook and delete the OST. Allow
Outlook to rebuild it.

Outlook doesn't have a contacts file. With an Exchange account, everything is
kept on the server. Even without an Exchange server, there is no "contacts
file". Ll of Outlook's folders are kept in a single file; all mail, calendar,
contacts, etc.

Backups in an Exchange environment should be done on the Exchange server, not
on the individual PCs. Perhaps, though, you're using a PST as well as the
Exchange mailbox. In that case, no backup program will ever succeed unless
you make sure Outlook is closed prior to the program making its attempt.
Outlook locks any PSTs it has open.

Brian,

I deleted the OST file and still have the same issue. It's really strange.
I also tried logging in to a different computer where I can see all my
contacts and exporting them, then reimporting them. Tried both PST and CSV
exports and neither one imported all the contacts. I also tried creating
another contacts folder on that computer and copying the contents of the
actual folder to the copy...no joy there either. Some will copy, others
won't, no error messages at all.

I should have given a better explanation of the Symantec issue. It reports
that my contact records have a virus...as an example, "Brian Tillman"
contains a virus.

You can try a popular Outlook recovery tool called Advanced Outlook
Repair to repair your PST file. It is a powerful tool to recover
messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft
Outlook PST files.

Detailed information about Advanced Outlook Repair can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe
Good luck!
