Contacts not accessible to the To and cc in Vista and Outlook 2007

I acquired a new stand alone PC 6 months ago moving up to Vista and Office 2007
Since then I have not been able to access Contact email addresses from the
To and cc fields of new emails. All software is kept up to date.
I recently observed that on conversion from XP / Outlook 2003 the file
format for the .pst file was left in the old format (97-2002). With a bit of
trouble I have now converted the .pst Personl Folders (and Archive) to the
current format. Both files are about 1.6GB. Contacts are available and
maintainable through the Contacts tab.
I have been through all of the steps set out in Help to allow Contacts to be
the address book, but all the things I could be doing are either greyed out
or already there and not deletable
What else do I need to reveal to enlist some wise counsel

Hard to know because you didn't say which steps you followed. Create a new
profile from scratch, migrate your data file to the new profile correctly
and follow these:

Mission complete, I think -
I created a new profile checked that contacts were the default address book
and them imported the old .pst file.
I ended up with 2 contacts folders (the new one plus the old one with all
the data in it) and I 'merged' them by dragging all the records into the new
folder and deleted the old (now empty) one.
After importing the old .pst file I also had to move all my old mail folders
including inbox contents to the new heirarchy but that seems to have been
successful

Nowhere do the instructions say to import a PST file. You should just open
another PST file if you want to use it or copy data from it. Outlook's
import procedure is not reliable and may corrupt your profile.
