contacts not available after PST file move

M

Marc Medina

I've recently moved several PST files (wiped computers, copied the PST's to
the server and now have the client machines accessing across the network).
Everything is fine, except that contacts are not visible when clicking the
"To:" button in a new e-mail. The contacts are visible and can be worked with
in all the usual ways using the Contacts button in the Outlook bar.

Any good ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

You want us to fix a configuration that is neither recommended nor
supported? Why?

In addition to what Russ said - you need to be aware that you run the very
real risk of quick and frequent pst corruption and possible loss of data by
keeping pst files on a server. They are NOT designed for network access...

Besides the fact that network use is not supported nor recommended....

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when
you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

If you are using Outlook 2007 and the the checkbox is grayed, you'll need to
make a new profile as you can't add the Outlook Address Book service due to
a bug.

Diane,
Can you please expand on the creating a new profile with Outlook 2007? I
switched laptops. I exported my Outlook(on old laptop) to a pst file, then
imported in into Outlook on the new laptop. Like you said, the check box is
grayed out. How can I fix this?

Attrition

Diane,

Thanks for your post as it helped very much. We purchased some new laptops
for our employees and chose to use the 'Windows Easy Transfer" wizard to
migrate each user to their new machine where they all subsequently hit this
bug. We are now in the process of creating new profiles for each of the
already migrated users (which is a huge pain by the way) and modifying how we
do future migrations to avoid this problem in the future.

It's a shame because what appeared on the surface to be a very nice and
smooth migration process using a system provided utility has turned into a
custom built utility and process.
