Contacts not found by e-mail

Based on replies to other posts, I will try to be as
complete as possible, but am really not sure what
information to supply. I am using Outlook XP (2002?).
Yesterday I had to do a complete restore of my hard drive
at the request of Dell Tech Support. Their four CDs
contained WXP and Office XP and after completing the
restore, I copied the back-up copy of my Outlook.pst file
back to my drive.

Everything seems to be there and working except that my e-
mail, when I hit send, returns a dialog box with a
message that Outlook does not recognize the name from the
message (I've seen this dialog box before when the name
was not in my contact folder). If I chose to browse for
more names, the next dialog box show no contact names in
the list. If I back out and go to my contacts folder,
over 800 contacts are there and complete.

Way steps can I take to get me e-mail function to see the
information in my contacts folder? Or what additional
information can I provide to help with the diagnosis?

or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

fully configured....might not work properly until re-
configured correctly. Further the "check box" under

Sounds like you haven't even added the Outlook Address Book Service yet.

I had a similar problem but can't fix mine as you suggested.

I moved things to my notebook, XP Pro. Installed Outlook 2003 and Word
2003 as trial. Worked great. After a few days, I went back to Word
2002 and Outlook 2002. Now the contacts do not come up in the TO:
field or in Word.

When trying to add directory and address book, I get "account not
fully configured" and I can't add or change anything..When trying to
change properties in Contact folder, the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box is dimmed.

I have Outlook.pst. I can see the contacts when I open the Contacts
folder and I can create new message thru Action menu.

I tried reinstalling Outlok 2002. Didn't help.

Describe how you did that.
Most certainly, you've corrupted your profile beyond repair. None of the
standard repair options would apply to you.
Create a new Profile from scratch.

What "profile" do I need to recreate from scratch? XP or Outlook or
Word or ????? Do I need to do anything special? Can I unload and
reload my contacts in a different format?

I had installed OL 2003 and Office Pro 2003 that a person in the house
had on his computer--just so I could see how different it was. I loved
it, but don't want to spend the money to upgrade now. Of course I
couldn't legally keep it on my computer, plus that activation thing
would kick me in the butt. (smile)

I simply reinstalled my old software, but kept my pst's.

You should be fine then as long as you have your PST's. Bear in mind,
however, that if you have a PST created by Outlook 2003, you will not be
able to use it in earlier versions. As long as your PST's are from earlier
versions, you'll be OK.

Just create a new Outlook profile in Outlook 2002. Make sure you use your
old PST as the data source. Instructions here:

DONE! Worked. Thanks. My pst was from OL 2003, so I removed it and
created a new profile and populated it anew by synching my Pocket PC
which had all contacts, calendars, tasks, etc. In a few minutes I was
back in business and up-to-date.

You should be fine then as long as you have your PST's. Bear in mind,
however, that if you have a PST created by Outlook 2003, you will not be
able to use it in earlier versions. As long as your PST's are from earlier
versions, you'll be OK.

Just create a new Outlook profile in Outlook 2002. Make sure you use your
old PST as the data source. Instructions here:

message (I've seen this dialog box before when the name
was not in my contact folder). If I chose to browse for
more names, the next dialog box show no contact names in
the list. If I back out and go to my contacts folder,
over 800 contacts are there and complete.

Way steps can I take to get me e-mail function to see the
information in my contacts folder? Or what additional
information can I provide to help with the diagnosis?
