Contacts not importing correctly

I have a pst file from outlook 2002, I imported it back into 2002 and 2007
with the same issue:

ALL CONTACTS APPEAR IN DELETED ITEMS AS EMAILS! When I move them back to
contacts, they are fine, but the email addresses and phone numbers are
missing!!

What is happening here?

As posted here many many times, on a daily basis:
DO NOT USE THE IMPORT FUNCTION TO TRANSFER DATA FROM ONE OUTLOOK TO ANOTHER!

Copy the pst file to your HDD, do not overwrite any existing pst file.
Remove any read-only attribute if set.
Then in Outlook do File-Open-Outlook Data File. Navigate to where you put
it. Then copy (or drag and drop) the data from the old file to the new. QED.

Go here for more detailed instructions on the correct way to transfer data
from one Outlook to another:

Cool. It is well documented that importing is never the correct way to
transfer Outlook data, but this takes the cake for data corruption. I'd love
to know how you did this. I'm sure there is more to your story you can tell
us.

Sorry! Forgive me, I will not cross post. I will keep the thread going here.

I HAVE FOLLOWED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY BUT IT IS STILL NOT WORKING.

Again, let me repeat, I am not "importing" anything. I am choosing file,
open. All contacts are being stuck in 'deleted items' as emails, and when I
move them to contacts, critical data is being stripped away.

If you are opening an existing PST file and the same issue(s) occur under
any version of Outlook, from a trouble-shooting perspective, first thing to
verify is that the PST file you are "opening" is not corrupt. Simply
"opening" a PST file does not cause any data to be moved to the Deleted
folder or any other. By the same token, deleting contacts normally does not
result in the message class to be changed to make it an email item. How did
the contacts get into the Deleted items folder in the first place and what
took place before these were deleted?

Your post requires an "assumption" that there were(are) no issues with the
data/PST file itself to start with - an assumption that is not a prudent one
to make given available (lack of) info. As the saying goes "the devil is in
the
details".
