Contacts revert to long date format (Sat, Dec 13, 2008)

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

Whenever I change a date within a contact it immediately reverts to the long format described above.. I have gone into international preferences and date and time preferences. I am getting a US format -- I'm getting the long format. How do i just have dates displayed within an Entourage contact as 12/13/08?
