The Global Address List (GAL) order is set by your Exchange administrator.
Ask if the contacts in the GAL can be sorted by last, first - but I doubt it
will be changed as the admin has to jump through some hoops to get it to
display by first last... and I suspect this was done at the request of a
"higher up."

After furious head scratching, scc r&p asked:
| I am having a similar problem. I am using Outlook 2003 at work and
| we have a "global address book." It is sorted alphabetically by
| first name (in other words, names are written as: Joe Smith) and I
| want to be able to look up people by last name. Is there a way that
| I can change this? I tried doing this as you explained (below) but it
| didn't work. Thank you!

|| To set the display order, open Tools->options->Mail Setup->Email
|| Accounts->Directory->View/Change - set your sort order there.

||| How do I set contact names in address book to default by Christian
||| name then surname. I just can't get it to work. If I change the name
||| to say Joe Bloggs, it keeps changing back to just Bloggs. What I
