"(Continued)" in Table and not in Table of Tables (Word 2007)

Hi. I have a few questions that I hope someone can assist me with. Please
excuse me if these have been asked and answered before...

1) I have some long tables than span two or three pages. I want the word
"continued" on subsequent pages but not the first page. I also don't want
the "continued" word to show up in the Table of Figures (Tables). Currently
I have the Table caption in a header row on the table so that it spans
multiple pages and I have the word "continued" on all pages. I can use a
Text box to hide the word "continued" on the first page but I can't figure
out how to hide it in the Table of Figures (Tables). Any suggestions or
other approaches to the problem?

2) Is there any way to have rows above a ToC or Table of Figures so that on
later pages it says (continued) at the top? I suppose I could do this with a
special header section but I thought there might be an easier way.
Suggestions?

3) I converted my document from a Word 2003 document and things seemed to be
working fine. Then "something" happened and now my List of Figures and List
of Tables are no longer sequential. They skip Figures and Tables. The
Tables and Figures in the document number sequentially fine. The ToC is fine
too. I've tried deleting and re-inserting captions from tables/figures that
enumerate okay but didn't solve the problem. I'd appreciate any and all help
on this one...

Under the circumstances, I think using the page header is probably the only
recourse (you'll need the table to be in a separate section, of course). The
alternative would be a TC field, but that would work only if your TOF were
actually a TOC.

You can use the style separator in documents that will be used again in
W2003 and take advantage of linked styles for those that will stay in W2007.
You need an addition style (say, fake caption) that has the same formatting
as the caption style for both methods.

In the W2003 method type the caption text (use caption style) and the
continued text (use fake caption style) in separate paragraphs and apply the
appropriate style to each. Put the cursor in the caption text paragraph and
press ctrl+alt+enter to insert the style separator. When the show/hide button
if off, the paragraphs will appear one line.

In the W2007 method, type the caption text and continued text in one
paragraph. If necessary, modify the caption and fake caption styles so the
style type is "linked (paragraph and character)". Then apply the appropriate
style to the caption text and the continued text.

If your lists of figures and tables are skipping captions, check to be sure
that the proper style is applied to each caption.

the removal of "(continued)" in the TOF. However, I found I still needed to
use a style separator in Word2007. Did I miss something?

On item (3), I verified that all the captions are of the "caption" style.
They enumerate okay in the document but not in the TOF. An oddity: if I
duplicate an errant caption so that it is on two lines then the second
caption appears in the TOF. If I then delete the first (errant) caption then
both captions don't show up in the TOF. Any other ideas?

_disable linked styles_ must be cleared. Come to think of it, linked styles
may not work if you are in the compatibility mode.

For item (3), could there be line feeds and not paragraph marks at the ends
of your captions? Or are the captions in text boxes, which the TOC in W2003
(and therefore the W2007 compatibility mode) cannot read?

I've compared the format of the captions on "working" figures to
"non-working" figures and they are the same. All captions were created with
the Figure->caption option and not text boxes. Is there some other "hidden"
information that Word 2007uses to build the TOF? If I take the document and
load into Word 2003 then it builds the TOC correctly. However, in doing so I
lose tons of document formatting...

trying to do the document in Word 2007; I only went back to Word 2003 as an
experiment. I have the problem with two TOF - one for tables and one for
Figures. In fact, some of the tables have the caption in the first row/cell
of the table. Some show up in the TOF and some do not.

If you select an image that is not in a text box and then use insert caption,
Word will place the caption in a text box. If that's the case, you can
