Continuing Chapter Numbers Across Parts?

W

Willie Hughes

Hello -

I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem.

I'm creating a fairly lengthy manual that is divided into
two parts - Part I and Part II - and subdivided into
numerous chapters.

"Part I" and "Part II" are currently formatted as Heading
1, Outline Level 1. The chapters are Heading 2, Outline
Level 2.

I would like for the chapter numbers NOT to restart at 1
at the beginning of Part II. That is, if the last chapter
in Part I is Chapter 17, then I want the first chapter of
Part II to be Chapter 18.

Is there a way to tell Word to not restart the numbering?

Thanks!

Willie - Assuming you're using the built-in Heading styles for your
manual, it's a snap to do what you want.

In the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, click level 2, then on
the right side go down to the checkbox that says "Restart numbering
after." Uncheck it. The box next to it gets dimmed out. That means
level 2, your chapter level, will go its own merry way in spite of the
change of Part I to Part II. - Bruce
