Continuous Page Numbering after inserting two colunms

In a single column Word (2003 or 2007) I want to insert two columns
while maintaining consecutive page numbers on my document.

It seems that when I insert the two columns, the page numbering on the
next page starts out as "one" instead of what it was (ie. page 5)

I gave up trying to figure it out how to do this, and I inserted a two
cell table. I put one column in the left cell and the other column in
the second cell. When this was done the page numbering on the next
page was correct.

Presumably the numbering was set to restart somewhere (Format Page Number)
and needs to be changed to "Continue from previous section."
