continuous page numbers in MS Word 2003

Linc

I am writing a book and adding each chapter when it is
finished to a master file. It has worked fine cutting and
pasting the chapter (with no page numbers) to the end of
the master file, which automatically adds page numbers to
the existing ones.

Until, that is, I pasted the lastest chapter, which did
NOT continue from the end of the master file but just
kept their old 1-40 numbers. Someone suggested a prolem
with Word's "page breaks", which I know nothing about.

Hi Linc

Put your cursor at the top of the document. Have a look in the status bar.
It should say something like Page 1 Section 1.

Now, move to the end of the document. Does it now say Section 2? Page
numbering is a characteristic of a section, so this is where your problem
lies. If it says Section 2, then you have two choices:

1. Ensure that the pagination for this section continues from the previous
section. To do that, Insert > Page Numbers, click Format, make sure that
"continue from previous section" is selected, click OK, then CLOSE (*not* OK
in the second dialog box).

or

2. If you have no reason to need a new section, delete the section break. To
find it, click the ¶ button on the toolbar. Use the cursor, and the
information on the status bar, to find where it is. (It's probably at the
beginning of the last chapter you added to the "master" file.) It will look
like =============Section Break (new page)==========. Select it and delete
it.
