Control Character appering in MS word 2000

I have a pecular problem in MS word 2000, when i open the
word doc the Control chaters appears.
can some one help how to dissable these characters

Jothi, make sure that when you have the File Open dialog, that the "Files of
Type" box says "Word documents", rather than "Recover text".
