control key types quotation mark

Hullo,
I am usingOffice 2000. InWord I have keyboard problems. When ever I
press control key in a shorcut, it makes some characters in the text.
Usually it is single quote. I am mad with my computer and keyboard and
almost smashed the keyboard against the wall.
Please help me urgently.
