Bear in mind that I'm new to Word, and someone who knows something will hopefully
come along with more reliable info, but:
I had a problem generating a genuine tab character, (the arrow when codes are
revealed), versus what you may be experiencing, just a five space indent with no
arrow and no little typewriter-style "L-shaped" tab indicator on the ruler bar.
I found that by clicking a tab five spaces in on the ruler bar with the mouse cursor
generated the tab indicator and also a tab character when used in the text. By
saving that as part of the template, I got both a *permanent searchable tab
character and the ruler marker. Saving this as normal.dot is a hassle, since you
can't save a template in use, and normal.dot seems always to be in use. (Ignorance
curve ahead
I resorted to saving it as "normal.dot" in a regular document folder,
then going to Windows Explorer and manually moving it to Templates buried way deep
in "Documents and Settings" (rename the original normal.dot to normal_SAFE.dot for
protection and make sure your macros are present).
A simpler, *temporary alternative (_if_ Word will allow you to do it) is to select
all the text and set a tab with the mouse cursor five spaces in on the ruler as
above. Good for one document anyway. Sometimes, though, it just doesn't work.
Again, particularly if you have any macros, protect the original normal.dot!
Good luck,
Travis
