Controlling the position of graphics on the page

Dear Experts

I am using Word 2003, 11.5604.5606

I have just used the drawing tools and various auto-shapes to create a
fairly basic diagram for a colleague, consisting of many boxes interconnected
by arrows to represent data flows. (Just in case it’s relevant, it is in A4
landscape orientation.)

He pronounced the diagram excellent in every way, _except_ for a fairly
small rectangle/square with a single-line border, not knowingly inserted by
me and completely superfluous, which had somehow appeared on the left hand
side of the diagram near the top. Though said rectangle is more or less in
the top left position, there are parts of objects elsewhere on the diagram
extend both further to the left and higher up.

I duly removed the unwanted excrescence, whereupon the rest of the diagram
moved to the left, as if to occupy the vacant space created by the deletion.
This meant that another object lower down the page, which originally extended
further to the left than the mysterious rectangle, is now so far to the left
that it is partly outside the usable print area.

Can anyone out there explain what is going on? How does one control the
placement of a page size diagram, in particular, how does one enforce the
margins, which seem to be being totally ignored?

Thanks in advance

Hopeful Kiwi
