Conversion error

I have an Access 2000 database where the links are to
tables in an Access 97 database (other users are
continuing to run an Access 97 version of the database).
When I try to open a report that works just fine in the
97 version of the database, I get the message: "The field
is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted
to add. Try inserting or pasting less data". The query
underlying the report works just fine but I am unable to
do anything with the data - it will not work as a make-
table query, I cannot export to a spreadsheet etc.

Since I no longer have Access 97 on my computer, I
converted the 97 data file to a new Access 2000 file to
look at the table directly and find that I have a
conversion error in one of my tables with the same error
message as above preceded by "-1043:" This table is one
of those included in the underlying query of the problem
report and I seem to have a similar problem with all
reports that use queries utilising that table. Reports
which are bound directly to the table, however, work just
fine. The only reference I can find in the Knowledge Base
is article 210304 which deals with converting data type
but I don't see that as relevant to my current situation.

I have run out of ideas as to what might be done to
correct or work around this problem. Any ideas?

Since writing this message, I have narrowed down the
problem to the key field in the offending table. All the
other data are exportable but not that field. The field
is a simple text field 25 characters in size so I cannot
see how something relating to data type conversion would
be an issue.

Hi John,

Unless someone has a better idea, that failure on converting the file to
2000 format makes me suspect that this table may be corrupt. Working in
Access 97, try various de-corrupting steps and see if this solves the
problem. (Tony Toews has a good corruption page at
http://www.granite.ab.ca/accsmstr.htm)
