Convert a document stencil to a home made one

Hi,
It it possible to save a document stencil to a different name and have this
new stencil be the default one for a particular template?

Thanks.

Hi JuneTheSecond,
I cannot save the stencil because it is a document stencil that I
personalized with some home made master shapes and some other ones from
modified UML master shapes. There is no Save as... command in the context
menu for the document stencil.
Thanks anyway for your comment.

A little background is needed. Visio has basically one file format and the
file extension lets Visio know how to open it. When you add shapes to a
Visio drawing (*.vsd), the shapes masters are copied to an area of the
drawing called the document stencil. If you rename a vsd (drawing) as a
vss(stencil), then the document stencil will now appear as a regular
stencil.

So to create a stencil from a document stencil, open a new stencil and drag
the masters to the new stencil OR change the name of a copy of the drawing
to have a vss extension.

Hi John,
Thanks for that precious information. It works fine. But now, I need to
disconnect some UML stencils that are glued to my drawing. How can I achieve
that? Is that possible?
Thanks again.

Once you drag a master to a drawing, you no longer need the stencil. You can
close a stencil by right clicking the header and chosiong close.

Hi John,
I know that I can close a stencil that I do not need any more, but some of
them keep appearing either when I open the template or when I activate
certain sheet (there are four of them).
I used some of them stencils to create my own master shapes from UML
masters. I think I will have to delete those shapes and recreate them from
scratch.
What are the rules for linking stencils to drawings? Where can I find
information about that?

Thank again.

Templates (*.vst) includes links to the stencils that need to be open, so
you either need to modify the template to remove the stencil. The template
is a blue print to explain how a drawing is created, so modifying a drawing,
does not affect the template that created it.

You should set things up with the stencils you need and save everything as a
new template.

Hover the mouse over the header bar (not the body) of the open stencil.
Right-click brings up a context menu including "Save As ..."
