I have never tried the above converter but as a Tech Writer I keep the
portable versions of freeware OpenOffice 2.0 and the latest (currently
3.1.1) on my flash drives and use them daily to fix words foul ups.
OO is not a total replacement for word as it lacks some (to me anyway)
crucial features. Web support is close to the quality of this site and
the MVP sites and the optional add ins are countless (tho I only use
2).
Both OO portable versions are very small and can convert not only ODT
but DOCX, WPD, Ami, Lotus (and dozens of other) files to DOC with very
few issues (highlighting is an issue with word).

The major advantages of OO if you work with word a lot is that it
edits and can often fix problem word docs -- OO2.0 opens passworded
DOC files (handy when I replace a techwriter who has passed on or
whatever), OO also make global changes to headers and footers (word
can't) and it even understands the "same as previous" header/footer
command that Word only quarter understands, fixes tables that word has
"improved", allows you to set and lock column widths (and does all
table functions from the right click instead of words many menus
spread all over the place), the OO numbering is not broken, etc.
Mailmerge is far better than Word2003/2007 but not as good as
Word2000.
Web support for OO is close to the quality of this and the MVP sites.
Unlike Adobe Acrobat it OO automatically produces top quality PDFs in
the page size you are working in and fully supports A5 paper. For
editing PDFs, naturally I still need the genuine Adobe
