Convert Autonumbering

Is it possible to convert autonumbered headings and
paragraphs to "flat" text (as if manually typed) AND
retain the number and the formatting?

Yes it is. Press ALT+F11 to display the Visual Basic Editor. Choose
View>Immediate Window. In the Immediate Window, type

ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText

and press ENTER.

Note that if numbering was applied with styles you must also remove it
from the style definitions. Otherwise, CTRL+Q, which resets paragraph
formatting to that of the underlying paragraph style, will bring
numbering back into your document.
