convert doc to html without extra code

Okay, I'm using Office 2001 (on a Blue and White DT g3) and when I
convert word docs into html I get all this extra code (span etc) which
I don't want. When I take this html file into Dreamweaver and select
all, change font, size etc.. not everything changes to my font choice.

I am sure this wasn't a problem with '98 but that's long gone.

I know Dreamweaver has a 'clean up word' thingy but that never works
as I want it to.

What I want is old fashioned html code from a Word Doc. Is there a way
of getting this using Word and not a 3rd party shareware app?

cheers

Hi

The whole point of Word's save as HTML is that you prepare your document to
your liking in Word, then Save As Web Page will create an HTML document that
will display as closely to the original as possible. If you use File > Open
from Word's menu, the resulting HTML file will very closely resemble the
original Word document.

Although Word's HTML code can be edited, ease of manual editing of the HTML
code was not a primary consideration. Making the document reproduce as
accurately as possible was the goal. Word is not the best tool to use if you
intend to make web pages that are easy to code by hand any more than
DreamWeaver is a good word processor. Granted, there is some overlap between
word processors and HTML editors, but not a whole lot.

There are some things you can do to reduce Word's formatting. You can save
the Word document as text rather than as HTML. Then open the text file in
DreamWeaver and format it as desired.

Sometimes copying a document from Word and pasting into DreamWeaver gives
acceptable results.
