Convert embedded Word document

When I insert a Word document object it always opens as a Word _picture_ (I
want to open it as a document!!!!!)

I try to convert it (Right click > Document Object > Convert) but there
seems to be a bug in Excel 2003:

As I select "Microsoft Word Picture" or "Microsoft Word Document", the
'Current type' information changes, but not the destination type in the
'Result' text area.

I have checked it in Word, and the behavior is just the opposite.
