Convert Fields to Text

dcrehr

I write TV documentary scripts for which I must number every element.

In Office X, I use the Insert Field (autonum) to do this... so that I get a complete sequence of numbers throughout the script.

At the end of the process, I need to freeze those fields... that is convert them to text so they no longer change when I move things around.

In Office X, I am able to do this for the whole document by saving it in Word 5.1 format. In Office 2008, the formats offered are not quite the same... and, more important... they don't do the same thing. When I save in an earlier format, the fields remain dynamic (changeable).

So... the question is... how, in Office 2008, can I freeze the information in the fields once I am ready to do so?

Hi DR -

If I correctly understand your need you've been working too hard all these
years:) It seems all you want to be able to do is *unlink* the fields in
which case Command+Shift+F9 will do the trick... but not for that type of
field. What you might consider using instead of AUTONUM is a LISTNUM field,
which can be inserted using Shift+Command+Option+L.

For any given field simply click in it then execute the keystroke.
Alternatively, Select All or a portion of the doc & use the keystroke to
unlink all fields in the selected range without disturbing others.

There may be additional - or better - suggestions offered, but try this out
in the meantime:)

I am using version 12.0.0 on the mac and neither Option+f9 nor Command+Shift+f9 seem to work. Has anyone else had this problem?
