That's probably "Recover Text from Any File". It's a sticky setting: once
you use it, you need to explicitly set it back again like this:
1) Start Word
2) Use Open from the File menu
3) Cancel the Project Gallery if it appears
4) Change the "Enable" or "Show" dialog to "All Documents" or "All Word
Documents"
5) Navigate to any Word document
6) Select it and OK.
It will be OK from there.
Recover Text ignores the file type and extension and opens the file as if it
were text. The Show drop-down (Enable in Word 2004) controls the File Type
that Word is expecting: everything except Recover Text will self-correct.
It's a bug...

My word document all of a sudden does not open. The convert file
dialog box opens and asks to convert the file. When you convert the file
it is gibberish.
What can I do to fix this?
