Convert from 5.0 to Excel 2000

I use windows XP and whenever I convert a spreadsheet
from Excel 5.0 to Excel 2000

a. the spreadsheet takes forever to load, calculate, and
save

and

b. Frequently causes Excel to "not respond"

Has this occured to anyone else?
Is there a cure for this?
