convert headings to bookmarks?

I have been convinced that master documents will become trouble, but I still
need to do that sort of thing.

I have read about creating a TOC across documents using RD fields. Makes
sense and seems to work.

Now I need to create cross-references to headings and captions across
documents also. I understand how I can use INCLUDETEXT fields to do so, but
they require bookmarks. Right now, my docs contain only standard heading
formats, no bookmarks. Is it possible to write a macro to auto-create
bookmarks for each heading? If so, anybody already have something I can use?

On the other hand, is there any other way to cross-reference to
headings/captions across documents?

I'm using Word 2003. Thanks

Note that if you have been using INCLUDETEXT fields to combine the
documents, you can insert cross-references to headings, via the Insert |
Reference | Cross-reference dialog box, in the target ("master") document.
Word will automatically create the necessary hidden bookmarks. And in order
to save the bookmarks back to the source documents, select the whole target
document and press Ctrl+Shift+F7.

I haven't been including whole documents in the "master" because that leads
to the original problem of a single file that's too big - >500 pages, lots of
graphics that balloon the doc to >60 MB. So, I'll need to keep the "chapters"
as separate documents and only merge them after printing.

I'm sure someone in the programming groups, for example in
microsoft.public.word.vba.general, can figure out a macro to add bookmarks
to the headings.

Note, however, that if you are simply trying to link to the "subdocuments"
from the "master," perhaps you can use hyperlinks.
