Convert Local Resources to Enterprise

H

Hadi

Hello,

I'm looking for some expert advice on how to go about this. I have about 50
project schedules that are saved to the project server 2003 but all have
local resources. I have about 40 resources but only about 10 are actually
assigned to these projects. Now, I need to create the same resources in the
enterprise resource pool, switch the assignments using the enterprise
resources on my projects, and then eliminate the local resources.

any particular recommendations on how to go about this as efficiently as
possible. is there any documentation about this?

Thank you,

Hadi

Hadi:

The simplest and most direct approach to doing this would be:

1) Save all your projects as mpp files
2) Delete them all from the server
3) Import only the resources from each plan, one-by-one using the Import
Resources to Enterprise from the Tools menu
4) Import each project one-by-one using the mapping feature to map the local
resources to the new enterprise resources

with 50 Schedules, this should all take about an hour an a half assuming
that each plan has resources that need to be imported. If you can build a
consolidated list of resources to import all at once, this could go faster.

Gary,

Thanks for the tips. a couple of questions

1- can I save files to mpp in a batch fashion?
2- as for deleting these schedules, should I just use the clean up database
function in PWA to delete them all at once? or is there another way of doing
it ?
3- Yes I can build a fresh resource list in a blank file and then import it
to the server before importing the file. I assume then everytime I import a
project It will just keep adding the hours/dollars to the enterprise
resources according to my mapping?

thanks again

1) You could write a macro to do this, but it would probably take as long as
to simply do it manually. If you're really good at VBA, maybe you'll save
some minutes? For 50 schedules, it doesn't seem worth it.

2) That's what I'd do

3) That would be a good approach and I'd probably want to put the time into
making certain that the Resource pool is correct as so much depends on it.
Importing the project plans goes very quickly if the resource pool is setup
correctly as this is about the only thing that can slow you down.

Gary,

I was doing some testing before I started on the subject task. I added one
of my local resources to the Enterprise field and when I tried to save, it
gave a message telling me there is a duplicate and if i want to replace the
local resource with the enterprise resource. I said yes and it seems to work
fine. what do you think about that? is it solid? it seems it would be easier
if I just do it that way. Basically build the enterprise resource pool and
everytime i save a file i can just tell it to replace local resources with
enterprise ones

thanks again
