Convert Main Data Source doesn't refresh data

If you respond yes to InfoPath's question whether to use any data in the .xml
file that you base your form on, then change some of the sample data in the
file, try to use Convert Main Data Source to refresh the data it doesn't
work. How can one update this sample data?

It just so happens that the mis-typed value was the first piece of sample
data in a repeating group. By right clicking on the field name in the data
source pane, picking Properties from the context menu, and setting a new
default value I was able to change the value. But, I can't see how this
would work for the 2nd, 3rd, etc. sample data instances.

BTW, I changed the actual structure of the XML document (not just the data),
did a convert main data source, and it did not update the data.

Ah, how about if I use an OnLoad handler to load a new XML document that has
all my correct sample data? Would that override the wrong data?
