Convert Publisher file to a PDF File

I currently have a large publisher file in the guise of a catalogue for my
buisness.
I wish to distribute this catalogue on a CD for my customers to view, as you
know not many people have Publisher, so therefore i wish to convert my
catalogue to PDF or another sutable file type, then burn to a CD so i can
distribute it in a programme that most people can view.

I am interested in the pdf document info. How do I go about "creating a
folder on my server"? I use the ftp to transfer to the web. I read David B.
"including external files in a publisher web", but I am new at this and am a
bit confused.

Usually, once you are connected to a site, your ftp program will offer
an option to create a new directory or folder. It varies from program to
program - check the menu items (File, Edit, Tools, etc) and see if
Create a folder, create a directory or such is an option. Sometimes, you
can right-click in a folder of the site and get an option to create a
folder or directory. You need to be sure, though, what folder or
directory you are in when you try to create a sub-folder.

When in doubt, ask your web host how to do it.

I contact our host and she verified that I had created a folder on the
server. I (think) I have uploaded one PDF file in the folder as a trial.
How do I make sure that I did get the file in the folder once I am in
Publisher and then upload that pdf files and then publish them to the
website? I will have numerous pdf files in the folder and I will need to
link to each file individually. The steps I am taking are:File-Publish to
the web-save in httpdocs-click on pdf folder -This is where I am stumped. I
see an index files (folder) in the box, as well as index.htm and index.html.
I can't see what is in the pdf folder, therefore I can not click on the
individual PDF file. I would appreciate any help/suggestions that you could
give me. Our host is not familiar with Publisher, therefore no help.

Excuse me for butting in here, but if you are going to be uploading a number
of PDF files using FTP, then I would suggest that you download and install
Filezilla http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ . There is documentation on the
site that tells you how to set it up and use it. I would suggest that you
download and read it. It is an FTP client, and after you set it up, you will
be able to log in to your web space, and see what files and folder you have.
You should be able to find where you put the new folder to contain your PDF
files. Note though that if you are using a form on your site, then you
cannot use FTP. You would need to use HTTP uploading protocol.

Then I would suggest that you put the folder where the PDF files will be in
the same directory or folder that contains your index.htm file, and
index_files folder that are generated when you Publish to the Web from your
Publisher document. Then using Filezilla, you can upload your PDF files to
your folder.

As per the links, if you named your pdf folder say "PDFFolder", you would
write your link thus:
http://yourwebsite.com/PDFFolder/yourfile.pdf

I downloaded the filezilla. I can see my files. Do I drag the PDF file to
the index.htm file and then upload it? Or do I upload the PDF file in its own
file? I tried to upload the PDF file to my website, obviously I am doing
something wrong as when I click the link, nothing happens. More info needed
please! : )

I don't understand your issue, but to review. After you log on to your host
you see the index.htm file and index_files folder that Publisher generated
when you Publish to the Web? And you see whatever folder you created to
contain your PDF files, correct? That folder should be right alongside the
Publisher index.htm file and the index_files folder. Assuming all this is
correct then you double click that folder to open it just like you would on
your computer, and drag/upload your PDF file to that folder. Then just write
the link as I suggested, using whatever folder name you chose to hold your
PDF files. Don't have any spaces in your PDF files, and match any upper or
lower case letters. When you click on the link when it is written correctly,
then assuming you have the Adobe plug-in installed on your browser, and most
people do, the PDF file will start to download and open in the browser. If
it is a large file and you have a slow connection that can take a while. You
can also right click the link and choose to save the file to your computer
instead of opening in the browser.

If this review of what you should do doesn't do the trick, then go back and
read David Bartosik's article about linking to external files, reread this
thread, and read the instructions in your FTP client, because you are
probably missing something simple. And if you still can't get it, then post
the URL of a page where you have written a link to the PDF file, and maybe
we can see what you are doing wrong. Good luck.

I uploaded the pdf file (sob.pdf) into the index_file. The link does not
work. http://www.cityofsidney.org/index_files/sob.pdf What am I missing?
The small circle at the bottom of the page - above the word home - is the
"trial" link. : )

Yes, after logging into my host I saw the index.htm file and the index_files
and my pdf folder. I previously dragged the sob.pdf file to the index_files.
No spaces, all small letters in my pdf folder.

Could I be hyperlinking it incorrectly? (Do I use link to existing file/web
page) OR am I maybe not getting the pdf file uploaded to my server?

Congrats! The link also worked for me.

One word of caution. If you update the site and upload a new index_files
folder, the old one may be overwritten which will mean your pdf file will be
deleted. Now that you have figured out how to write the link, you should
consider putting these pdf files in a separate subfolder.

When I put the pdf files in a separate subfolder (I'll call it pdf) do I drag
the entire pdf folder to the index_files? And each time I add a pdf file to
the subfolder, I would need to overwrite the pdf subfolder and redrag it?

Sometimes I think I get in over my head...but then, when I finally get
things to work I am intrigued and think "Ahhhh, what is next!" Your team is
such a big help...I appreciate all the communication and the rapid responses.
It also helps to read the various inquires as each one has particular bits
of info that was very important to my PDF SUCCESS. Once again, David...You
came through for me! ~Lori

BTW: The recommended (free) Filezilla and the PrimoPDF were great tools.
Couldn't have completed my "mission" without them.

Lori,

If you created a subfolder called "pdf", and placed it at the same level in
your webhost directory as your index.htm file and your index_files folder,
then you upload the PDF files that you want available for downloading to
that folder, not the index_files folder. Then you just change your link
from:
http://www.cityofsidney.org/index_files/sob.pdf
To:
http://www.cityofsidney.org/pdf/sob.pdf

Don't mix up the terms files and folders. You put files in folders, not
folders in files.
