convert word 98 files into works files in xp

When trying to convert my files from WORD in windows 98 into works files in
windows XP, a popup states that it cannot be done.

The Works word processor will not open Word files. Try using Wordpad, which
comes with Windows XP.

My Word 2003 (and prior verssions as I recall) and my Works 7.0 each can
read/write each others's standard format. Perhaps you are missing the
right conversion files filters in Word. Re-run the setup program and look.
