I am downloading information into a word merge (rtf) which I need to
convert to .xls to upload to USPS for postcards. Can anyone give me a
step by step to do this?

Many thanks,

Word DOC/RTF Format for a document is not the same thing as an Excel XLS
spreadsheet. If they were the same, then either Word or Excel would not
exist.

Just paste the document into Excel and Word and Excel will work as hard
as they can together to deal with it. But results will be unpredictable.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

When I paste it into Excel, I get a bitmap. How do I open it?

Only way I'm accomplishing it is to save the file to notepad .txt,
open it with Excel, cut and paste and save it as .xls It seems there
should be an easier way. The file is a downloaded mailing list.

Many thanks again.

My practice is to always *always* use Edit/Paste Special and then pick
the relevant choice. Excel is pretty "smart", but sometimes needs help.
When you do it this way you'll see that you will have an option to
paste in as text.

The other way, assuming the file is basic text, is open the .txt file
direct from Excel. It will notice and adapt how to open.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

In word, arrange the info into an arrangement such as:

Name (tab) Address (tab) other data as necessary.

In other words, separate your data items with a tab.

Go to file/Save as/ and select the save as type TEXT

Open Excel and open the text file.
It will arrange your data in columns.
