"converter" error: Word 2003 won´t open documents

L

LA Ray

Within the last week, certain Word and JPG files have been somehow
“corrupted†so they will not open with any program. With the Word 2003
documents, the most recent ones open fine, while those older than a few
months get the error message. With photos, there appears to be no timing
issue I can determine; some new ones are corrupt; some old ones are fine.
When I open the same documents on my backup CD or flash drive, they open
fine, indicating that only the files on the computer are corrupted. Messages
displayed:

Word: “Microsoft Word needs a converter to display this file correctly.â€
Even when I go through the converter process, the document is gobbledygook.
What I’ve done: System Restore back a week. Reload Word. Re-register Word.
Hold down Shift, right-click file, Select Open “Always open with Word.â€
Problem remains. I’m thinking something’s wrong with the registry, but don’t
know how to fish around in there.

MS Picture/Fax Viewer: “Couldn’t display X.jpg because a suitable graphics
importer could not be found.â€

Photoshop: “Could not open X.jpg because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker
type is found.â€

However, when a folder with “corrupted†JPG’s appears in Win Explorer, it
shows the four little thumbnails on the folder.

Thanks for any advice. Ray
