How do I locate & download a converter so I can open Word 2008 files? My copy of Office 2004 hasn't been updated for more than a year--does that matter?

Hello Hera -

You need the converters as well as the 11.5.0 update. This site has links to
both downloads:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953823/

Make sure to repair disk permissions after applying them. There's also
another update - 11.5.1 - which you can get through Help> Check for Updates,
then repair permissions again.

It's on the Microsoft site.

I guess you already know this, but maybe some people here are new, so I
should mention that not updating is pretty dangerous with the 'new,
improved' internet nasties going around these days. If people don't keep
putting in the security updates, their computer is not safe on the internet.
Eventually (within, say, a month or two -- but it can be 20 minutes or so
....) someone will break in. When they do, the problem is not that YOU have
lost all of your data. The problem is that THEY have it all: all those
lovely bank account and credit card numbers and social security numbers and
drivers licence numbers... All belonging to a syndicate of the Russian
Mafia, and on-sold to a series of Chinese websites.

Yes, it does matter: the converter will refuse to install until you update,
and it won't run well until you get the 11.5 update in.

After you run the updates, the converter is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads

Hope this helps

Thanks very much for the info. I downloaded the 11.5.0 update and the converter, and it opened my test file.

Where do I find the 11.5.1 update? (The Help feature for the converter is not suggesting it.)

Also, how do I repair disk permissions? I'm new to this.

Much appreciated,
Hera

Disk Utility is a maintenance program which comes with OS X. It can be found
in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder - although I'd highly
recommend adding it to your Dock. Permissions should be repaired whenever
you apply updates to OS X/Applications/drivers or install new software.
There are also 3rd party utilities - such as OnyX - which you might prefer
to use. Most are either free or are shareware.

As for the 11.5.1 update, launch any of the main Office applications then go
to Help> Check for Updates. It would also be a good idea to take advantage
of the "Automatically check..." feature.
