converting a database from 97 to 2000 or above

Hi

I've received such huge help from everyone here that i wondered if anyone
could help me.

We are currently still using access 97 but most of our users now have access
to 2000 or above. So, my thinking is that maybe it is time to start thinking
about converting the database to 2000.

I was hoping that it would be simple (nothings ever simple with me ), and
tried on a copy of the database but it was unsuccessful.

What im wondering is, is there anything that i need to do on the database
before hitting the convert button?

I've tried the search function but find the information a little confusing.

A completely healthy, error free A97 file should convert to A2K and work just
fine. One way to judge the "health" of your A97 file is to see if you can
create an MDE from it. If you have corruption or compile errors then you won't
be able to make an MDE and those same issues would prevent a successful
conversion to A2K.

I can create an mde fine using access 97 but can't do it in 2000 because it
tells me i have to convert the database first. When i try to convert it
tells me "Could not find field description". Only trouble is that it does
not give any other information than this - i would have thought it would
point me towards the relevant table, form etc that it was referring too.

I have another question that im not sure if you would be able to answer?, we
have a form that we use hyerlinks in (we link to word files), we can do this
in 97 but we lose the option in 2000. I have no idea why it would make any
difference but im not sure how to change it so that the 2000 users can also
hyperlink.

As it turns out, I just happened to run across some information recently
while trying to find out a little info about security at Lynn Trapp's 10

and check out the linked section therein entitled "The Database Owner"

If you do, you'll find this paragraph forth from the top:

"Another situation relates to the conversion of databases from one version
to another. The Microsoft Conversion white paper, and all other Microsoft
sources that I have seen up to this point, indicate that any user who has
Administer permissions to all objects in a database should be able to convert
the database. This is NOT true. Only the OWNER of the database can convert
it. Thus, to convert a database to a later version it is also necessary to
take steps to be sure that you are logged on as the owner. If you are not the
owner and/or do not know the owner’s password you will need to follow the
procedure below to make yourself the owner."

Just below that it tells you how to "Change the Owner".

I'm not sure, but maybe this is the issue you are having.
