Converting an .xls file to .xlsx

This may take a bit to explain:

I merged an Excel file from an older version with a 2008 file. It is now a shared workbook and every time I enter new data and then go to save I get a pop up screen stating "Some content in 2008Inventory.xls may not be saved because it is not compatible with the Excel 97-2004 workbook (.xls) file format."
Smaller type then instructs " To save the workbook in a new format and preserve all content, click No and then on Format pop-up menu click Excel workbook (.xlsx)"

OK...so when I click Nobthe only pop-up I receive asks "Do you want to save changes to 2008Inventory.xls" If I choose Save it saves the work- if I click cancel it reverts to the previous message. I get no Format pop-up menu and no option in Format on the menu bar that offers Excel Workbook (.xlsx) as an option.

Thus far I have not lost any data that I have been entering but I would prefer to be able to make entries w/o having to navigate thru the content warning message and be assured that my information is not possibly being corrupted.

Are all the users sharing the workbook on Excel 2008 or Windows Excel 2007?
If so, then, with NO OTHER USERS with the file open just do a save-as. Pick
Excel workbook (.xlsx) leave the name and directory the same, click yes for
the overwrite message. It should then be OK.

I am not quite sure how this even became a shared workbook as there are no other users. When I tried a save-as as per your recommendation I got an error message suggesting that I unshare the workbook. I would love to- but cannot figure out how to make that happen.

Look in the tools menu.
