Converting back to '03

Cleint had moved from '03 server to '07, but due to various reasons
outside my control and against a recommendation not to, they are
moving back to '03.

For the MS Project files is there a recommended procedure to save them
back into their '03 state while retaining the structure of the tasks
and subtasts, etc? Here is an initial thought:

Export to Excel - using the Project Pro 2007 Client:

-Open Project Pro 2007, Connect to Server

-Open Project from Server

-Save as a Local File

-Close Project Pro 2007

-Open Project Pro 2007, Work OFFLINE

-Open File (*.mpp)

-Tools > Options: Security Tab - under Legacy Formats, select Prompt,
click OK.

-Save As: Type: Excel Workbook (*.xls); Save.

-Export Wizard: Next, Select Project Excel Template, Finish, then Yes.

-Move the file as necessary.

Import from Excel - using the Project Pro 2003 Client:

-Open Project Pro 2003, Work OFFLINE

-Tools > Options: Secutiry Tab - under Legacy Formats, select Prompt,
click OK.

-Open: Files of Type: Excel Workbook (*.xls); Select Project, Open.

-Import Wizard: Next, Select Project Excel Template, Next, As a New
Project, Finish, then Yes.

-Save Project as Type: Project (*.mpp)

-Close Project Pro 2003

-Open Project Pro 2003, Connect to Server

-Build Resource Pool from Enterprise and ensure all Resource Use is
correct.

-Save Project to Project Server, fill in required data (again, assume
anything existing was incorrect - verify!).

Just taking a cursory glance at your procedure, I would make the following
comments:

1. I believe you can simply open an enterprise project and save the file as
an Excel workbook directly, without the intermediate steps you specify.

2. Keep in mind that if you export an enterprise project to Excel, you will
lose the timephased Actual Work. Instead, I believe the system will apply a
Flat contoured pattern of the Actual Work to the task when the file is
imported in Project 2003.

3. Instead of using the Project Excel Template for the export to Excel, you
may wish to create your own custom export/import Map. I'm pretty sure the
Project Excel Template will not contain all of the fields you want exported
from 2007 and imported back to 2003.

Just some thoughts. Perhaps the others will have some ideas for you as
well. HOpe this helps.

Mike:

Open the project and Save As an mpp file to a disk or share selecting the
legacy file format
Use import project to enterprise to bring them back to Project Server 03

Condolences on the situation, wish you were asking how to overcome the 2007
objections instead.
