Converting .doc file to .txt file

What is the best way to save a doc file as a text file so that all the characters will be read correctly in html?

I often am giving a .doc file with content to be put into an existing Web page. So I am always doing a Save As... to change the doc to a text version so I can easily input it into the html.

However, the way I'm saving the file as text (Text Encoding: Mac OS) the apostrophes and quote marks don't change from curly quotes to the readable "tick" marks for html.

So, how can I convert a doc file to a txt file so that these characters change to the straight quote versions? Thx.

I don't suppose "Save as Web Page - Filtered" would help :)

Otherwise, you need to match your text output format to the encoding format
of the web page.

Mac OS is the last format you would choose, because although it is
compatible with elderly Macintosh computers, it breaks on nearly anything
else :)

I set all my web pages to UTF-8 encoding, and save Text Files in Unicode
UTF-8. That will correctly render any known character without requiring any
special coding or tricks, in any known browser still in use.

However, if your webpage does not contain an <meta http-equiv="Content-Type"
content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/> tag, all bets are off. Modern browsers
will attempt to "guess" what the encoding is, often with some highly amusing
results.

Cheers
