Hi Ron,

A .WPS file is generally from MS Works word processor
and Word needs a converter installed.
http://microsoft.com/products/works/homepages/ProductUpdates.asp

After installing the converter you can turn on
[x] Confirm Conversions at Open
in Tools=>options=>General in Word to be sure its
the correct converter for the .wps file being opened.
