Converting footnotes to end note

I have a 90 page document on Word XP, with many footnotes in it. When I
convert all the footnotes to end notes Word starts repagination. I left it
until it reached 4000 (Yes four thousand) page and then I stopped.

So I started converting the footnotes to endnotes manually, I mean one by
one, not by cutting and pasting. It works fine until the footnotes fill one
page, afterwhich Word again starts repagination and never stops.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Suzanne, but your guess did not solve the problem. The endnote style
does NOT have "Keep with next" or "Keep lines together" checked. The "Widow
orphan control" was checked, so I even removed that option and tried again,
but to no available, same result.
