Converting formulae into text entries

One of my students has given me a problem that I can’t find an answer
to. She has a worksheet that contains many rows of stock codes in a
single column. These codes were supposed to to have a + sign in front
such as +GMDJEXT, +GMD--BY. However for some reason, they ended up as
=+GMDJEXT, =+GMD--BY and as a result, Excel interprets them as formula
and display them as #NAME?.

We would like to convert them to display as text entries with an
apostrophe sign in front such as ’+GMDJEXT and ’+GMD--BY.

I have tried the few methods I know but I have been unsuccessful.
Using concatenate to add the ’ sign gives me the same result i.e.
#NAME?. Changing the format to text doesn’t help.

I’ve tried to record in a macro the steps to edit and place the ’ sign
at the front but I can’t get around the relative/absolute reference
switch and my macro ends up changing every cell into the same exact
text as the first cell.

I would dearly appreciate any help pointing to any function or a
simple macro to solve the problem. Thanks.

Hi-

Don't mean to be a smart A, but if your post indicates accurately what was
done in the worksheet, you have commas (,) confused with apostrophes (')...
The apostrophe is what you need.

If you have any formulas in the sheet you'll have to be selective, but if
not just use Find & Replace to Find = and replace with '.

The plus sign, btw, is interpreted by Excel as a math operator, which is why
it's "intuitive" skills added the = for you. From now on have the user type
the ' first and the problem should not persist.

Find and replace did it in a flash. Thanks a million, mate. You
saved me plenty of grey hairs.
