Converting from 97 to 2002 and file size

Can anyone explain why an 8Mbyte database grew to 22
Mbytes after beign converted to Access 2002?

Conversion was done in three steps Acces 97 -> 2000 ->2002.
I've seen the database start at 8 Mbytes, then become 5
MbYtes after compacting and end up 22MBytes !!!

Thanks

One thing is that Access 2000 and above stores text field in unicode, which
uses twice the space. If you go into your tables and set the Unicode
Compression property of your text fields to Yes, you may get some size
reduction after compacting. Still, 22MB is not that large for a database.
