converting front page files

I have a student who created a word-like document at home using FrontPage.
It now will not open anywhere. It looks as if it is saved as a tmp file. We
want to convert it to a word document. Thanks

Frontpage is not a Word Processing application. The student should be using
MS Word, but that fact aside, MS Word should be able to open an HTML
document. There's no special formatting involved. HTML files are ASCII
text files, and can be opened in any text editor.

Try changing the "file type" in the Open-File dialogue to "Webpage" or "HTML
file" (terminology may differ in your version of Word). In Word 2007, for
example the file types are specified in a drop-down list. Basically Word
2007 can open anything from MS Works, WordPerfect etc, including Web pages.
Choose "All Web Pages" from the drop down list, and select the file to open.

It sounds like you didn't actually save the document (using the File / Save
command) if all you have is a *.tmp file.

Seeing the question is more about Word than Frontpage, you might also ask
the experts at the MS Word forum(s) / newsgroup(s).
