Converting large docs to docx

S

Steve Hodgson

I have been trying a conversion of a large document from doc format to
docx in word 2008. The document is around 590 pages and about 18MB in
size and each time I try to save it I get a file error message shown
below.

Any idea what causes this message?

Hi Steve:

If you are on a network, it may be that the file server is not responding
correctly (unlikely...)

It is more likely that there is something in the document that Word doesn't
like. While it is thinking about it, the file system is timing out.

First: De-corrupt your normal template (re-name it, and re-name the Word
X/2004 Normal template as well. If you do not disable the Word 2004
template, Word 2008 will copy it instead of making its own new one.

Restart and quit Word 2008 to force a write back of the new Normal template.

Then create a new blank document and copy everything except the last
paragraph mark from the bad document into it. That cleans up the numbering
and the style table.

If that has not fixed it, try a "binary search"...

1) Copy the document in .doc format

2) Cut the bottom half off and save to .docx

3) Cut the top half off and save to .docx

Chances are, half will save, the other half won't... The problem is in the
half that won't save. Save that to .doc

Repeat 1, 2, 3 with the bad half...

Keep repeating until eventually you have only one paragraph in each half.
The half that won't save has a corruption in it.

Be very suspicious of pictures, and tables, and numbering. These are the
things that are most likely to corrupt. When they corrupt, the XML
converter can't understand the code and hangs...

Hope this helps
