converting templates to documents

I am running on Mac office 2004 version 11.2. I have word template that
will not allow me to save as .doc files. The templates are read & write
and are not locked. When I try to save the as a .doc a warning appears
stating "you cannot save a template file to a non-template format."
This seems to work on other machines, but not my G4 power book. Any
advise?

Hi Brian-

The problem is that you are opening the .dot file which cannot be Saved As a
..doc... You must generate a new .doc based on the template, edit and save it
as a .doc file.

If it isn't already stored there, move the template file to
Applications|Microsoft Office 2004|Templates|My Templates. When you need to
create a new doc based on it, go to File|Project Gallery>New, select My
Templates & double-click your template item.

It doesn't seem I made my main point quite clear enough, so let me be a
little more specific;

_Do Not_ double-click the template file icon, _Do Not_ use File|Open or the
Open Icon on your Standard Toolbar.

If you do you will be opening the template, itself (for the purpose of
making changes to it or using it as a model for creating a new template),
and you _cannot_ save a template as a document.

You _must_ start your new documents based on the template from the Project
Gallery.

If the template file is currently open, close it. Follow the directions in
my earlier post you will be creating _new_ documents based on the template,
not editing the template.

Hi Brian:

Read what CyberTaz wrote very carefully :) You MUST do exactly what he
says.

It's a design bug in Word for Mac: it doesn't handle templates properly
(i.e. It doesn't do what you would expect if you have experience of
WinWord).

In future versions, the distinction between template and document files will
become far more important, so you may consider it good working practice to
understand the mechanism and ensure that get it right from now on :)

Cheers

I have tried to edit and save as a .doc, but still get the warning.
Bummer.
