Converting Word documents to pdf

I've noticed a problem with converting a Word document that has a shaded text
box in it into pdf format. When viewed with a pdf viewer such as Adobe
Reader, any document with a shaded or coloured text box from Word not only
loads slowly but then scrolls slowly once loaded. I'm using Adobe reader on
modern, powerful PC's. If i convert a Word document without a shaded or
coloured text box to a pdf file, it loads and scrolls like a dream, i've even
tried some with pictures and a variety of graphics, and they're okay as well.

Whilst investigating this problem, i've tried 3 different pdf conversion
products, Cutepdf, Primopdf and PDF995 in case it's something specific to the
conversion, but they all produce the same result.

I've looked for any mention of this problem on the Adobe site but um unable
to find anyhting. If anyone had any experience of this problem or has any
advice, it would be much appreciated.

I suggest you try generating similar PDFs from a different application
than Word. If the problem persists, it sounds like a PDF "problem" (and
you can then go ask in comp.text.pdf if you feel so inclined). That a
PDF page consisting of simple text only can be rendered more easily than
one with a graphical box in it does not per se seem strange IMHO.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the tip, i'll give it a go.

I should have added in my original question that the rendering of the part
of the pdf that contains what was a shaded or coloured text box in the Word
document thrashes the PC. The processor usage goes above 50% constantly while
just scrolling through the document and stays there for minutes after the
last key press or mouse movement.

I'll see what progress i can make with your suggestions and then i'll re-post.

The products you mention are, I believe, all free download type software. You
get what you pay for. I use Acrobat 6 in Word 2003 and it makes great pdfs.
If you have CorelDraw or a graphics program try and open your pdf and examine
the shaded boxes, they may have been converted to images or something like
that.
