copied cell shows original value

there was a post on this very problem that suggested turning on auto recalc
but this did not work for me. I tried all the usual cell formatting (that I
know -- there may be others).

specifically I inserted a new collumn A. I then used the =row() formaul to
get the row number in the cell as manipulatable data. I then inserted a new
column B and wrote a formual to take the difference between the value of the
row numbers . I then fill copied the formula by dragging it down.

the first formula returned the number 57 (the correct answer) the next cell
57, the next cell 57 and so on. The formula is being correctly copiedI have
not seen this one before.

Anybody got any ideas?

I am assuming your formula in A1 is =ROW()
What, exactly, is your formula in B1?

thanks for the question. turns out it was a brain fart on my part. I was
copying the cell down the subtotal view of a spreadsheet as if it was the
spreadsheet itself. as a result taking the difference between adjacent rows
in the first cell of the compressed view was simply delivering the same
result all the way down the sheet.

having said this I thought it was possible to export the subtotal view data
to a sheet in which the subtotal lines would lose in fact becopied over as
adjacent rows. Seems to me I've done it before. couldn't figure it out last
night.

if you know how to do that it would be helpful.
