Copied formula behaving as text

I'm copying a IF function formula from one cell to a
target cell. Then, I'm editing a cell reference in the
target cell. Upon completing the editing, the formula is
displayed in the target cell as text and does not
function. What gives?

Make sure there is an = (equal sign) in fromt of the pated
formula.

These answers supplied by Ken Wright and Gord Dibben.

1. Try formatting the cell as General.

2. Make sure you haven't set the sheet to display formulas : On the
MenuBar : Tools > Options > View Tab > Uncheck

3. Just changing the format of a cell with an existing formula in it
that is being treated as text will not make it work on it's own. You
also need to hit F2 on that cell and then hit enter for it to be
treated as a formula.

4. If the formulas still shows results after you F2 > Enter, this
usually means that the cells were originally formatted as "Text"
before the formulas were entered. Select the cells. Edit > Replace.
