copied or modified formula doesn't work

I mean it doesn't work. The formula (index and match) is good (it
works in adjacent cells) but in the copied or modified cell the cell
contains the formula, not the result. I'm using excel 2003. I've never
had this problem before. What's going on? Thanks in advance for your
help.

check if this cell is NOT formated as 'Text' (menu: Format - Cells).
Change the format to 'General' and re-enter your formula
