Copy a formula

I want to copy a formula down a column but not change the first value.
Example =SUMIF(AV4:BU4,"child",AV7:BU7)
I don;t want the AV4:BU4 to change.

You need to use an absolute reference i.e. $AV$4:$BU$4.

Hi,

The $ sign locks the address and there are 4 variations. the formula below
shows all 4

=SUMIF(AV4:$BU$4,"child",$AV7:B$U7)

AV4= releative both change when dragged
$B$4 = absolute i.e nothing changes when dragged
$AV7 = Column will not change but row will
B$U7 =Row will not change but column will

Just to add...

When you type in your cell reference in a formula and are still in the edit
mode, hit F4, it will toggle the cell through the four references available
to the cell as Mike points out.
